Dr. Charles Ihrig is a Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor with more than three decades of experience in mental health care. He is the Founder and President of Athena Care, established in 2001, which has grown under his leadership into one of Tennessee’s largest private mental health providers, offering comprehensive psychological services statewide. Dr. Ihrig earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Tennessee State University. He completed his internship and residency in the Department of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he trained in both adult and pediatric populations. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. A generalist by training, Dr. Ihrig has extensive experience conducting diagnostic evaluations across the lifespan. In recent years, his practice has become more focused on forensic psychology, and he currently divides his time between forensic work and executive leadership at Athena Care. His forensic practice includes both civil and criminal matters, with a primary emphasis on custodial evaluations. Dr. Ihrig also directs Athena Care’s Comprehensive Assessment Program for Professionals (CAPP), a national program providing multidisciplinary evaluations for physicians, attorneys, and other professionals referred by licensing boards and professional organizations due to concerns related to mental health or practice risk. In addition to his clinical and forensic work, Dr. Ihrig has been actively involved in training and education throughout his career. He has served as an Adjunct Professor at Tennessee State University and Vanderbilt University and continues to supervise doctoral- and master’s-level trainees at Athena Care.
